Syncope is temporary loss of consciousness and body posture. It can be caused by any of the following conditions. In common language it is known as fainting.
- Vasovagal syncope
- Postural hypotension
- Cardiac arrhythmias: Stokes Adams syndrome
- Stenotic lesions of the heart: Aortic stenosis, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, pulmonary and mitral stenosis, Fallot’s tetrad.
- Cerebrovascular insufficiency: Vertebro-basilar insufficiency, carotid sinus syncope, etc.
- Miscellaneous: Massive myocardial infarction, pericardial tamponade, left atrial myxoma, micturition syncope, cough syncope, internal bleeding, etc.
